Finding forrester another in the genius mini series

I recently watched this film

and some of you may know it being the most famous off of the list

some points really jumped out
such as with the main character
and how he was another fish to big for the pond he was in
but also the fact that he a master of disguise
concealing what was inside him
from virtually everyone
only relinquishing restraint in the exam he took
and how many of us hide our light to fit in
and just skate through life and our surroundings
but also on the flip side why did he feel the need to hide

but with hiding one judges a book by its cover
for his school were amazed since his work was borderline
and his test scores were so remarkable
but sometimes our book is judged without our involvement
and that is when he spoke out to defend his honour
and show what was underneath the cover
such as with the scene with the guy and his bmw
showing that those who judge rashly are not wise
another thing that stood out was once again there was a single parent theme going on
and that with the good of films like these their is always something that taints it
but then he transfers schools
but you can feel the sense he feels out of place
and is without peers
and that is a fear for some people that the higher they go or in search of their goals
the more isolated they could become for lack of peers

but the other story is of one of friendship
and mentorship
where they bring out of each other what they could not do themselves
one a place to be themselves
a company of equals and a place to rest his mask
and share his burdens
and the other to realign them with old loves
such as baseball and writing
and the importance of sometimes searching of how to help those who help you

but it is not without adversity there will be those who doubt you and will be jealous
but rather than a deterrent let them be your drive
and when you are in these places without peers you may have to constantly reaffirm yourself
and show what is under your cover

but that sometimes comes with a price
but as nietzsche once wrote no price is too high for the privilege of owning yourself

but you can also end up right back where you started
and this is the fear some of us have so we do not speak out
but then how much do you value yourself
this is very much the focus of the scene where during their big game

the coach lets him know that even though he is under investigation
the charges can be dropped and he sympathies and that it could of come about because his schedule was to grueling
and that he can drop the academic side of his scholarship
and just focus on the sport side of the scholarship
and keep doing what he has been doing and win games
this was a very powerful part of the movie
and he is presented with the choice
do what is best for himself or for others
reaffirm himself or stereotypes
and he chose the price which is never to high and was himself
and that he was not going to be in a box
of the so called jock
the mindless sportsman because of ease

and there is a time where all your work pays off

and there was no grander moment than this where
it seems that he may of chose the wrong decision
to stand up for himself
he is vindicated when his mentor and friend
comes to his aide
and you can see in his face a plethora
of emotions
vindication righteous indignation
and joy
but also so suave
letting the actions speak as loud as they were
to silence the doubters
it was such a powerful scene
and how in all he was a dignified person
who would rather suffer than betray a friend
and was not about vengeance
but justice
for some of us would not been able to hold in the righteous anger and would of smirked or hailed
abuse his way

with the last few scenes showing how now he was becoming his own master
and he had taught the teacher something
and the possibilities were endless

ending with the last scene
him being in his will
and where the place which prior held fear and myth
was his intertwined with fond memories
and gentle blessings

akeelah bee a genius part 2 in mini series

So here we are in part two of our genius mini series

so this was a great film filled with depth and less gritty than the first installment in the mini series
so you can watch this with kids
but main overlapping issues are there and coincidentally have a parent missing

but our main character is a big fish in a small pond stuck in the midst of mediocrity
and is frankly malnourished
she basically is a autodidact since she starts of skipping classes
and is in the place many have been before never having to try because they are so skilled
she gets the highest grades on her spelling tests without even trying
and in fact tries to hide it so not to stick out
which is the problem for these big fishes or birds
contorting their shape to fit into the pond
or curbing their wings stuck in a cage

she has a skills and she never envisions it can be utilized
it is a gift hidden behind the stage curtain
but with many like her they need vision they need a push and they need will and guidance

and though she can spell well it was not being reflected in her vocabulary
or her lifestyle
and one pivotal part of the movie was when she went to her mentors house

and he rebuked her use of language
and his approach saw her shunt him but not before showing she was capable of a greater grasp
of vocabulary

so she went on her own and just scraped through the first and her first qualifying rounds
whence she went back to the mentor to be guided

where he started to point out to her the need of more than raw talent
and a new perspective on spelling as well as giving her courage and self belief
for spelling is seen as the remembrance of words and sequence of its letters
which it is but it is also or can be more than that

for with this language and it roots in many others you can use that to your advantage
for is one thing to merely try memorise words
and another to make it part of your routine
which she fairly had before in playing scrabble
but by reading books and changing her scenery
for a manner of manor woman can be found in their scenery sometimes
as with products of your environment

as with the previous entry in this series akeelah had to deal with adversity
unlike many of other contestants
from having a deceased father
to underfunded schools
to lack of support from family members at first
and a group of peers

and for many gifted they lack nurturing environments
or peers to view themselves inside of
or to challenge them and aid them to strive higher as we see at the end of the movie where

akeelah and her rival are working in tandum to both claim the first place prize

where she thought he was her rival yet her only rival was her self

the mentor stance might be one that shocked people the firmness yet friendly distance
his stance was one of a guide
seeing what the pupil could not see from the tricks she uses to memorise
to experience and tactics
and this is what she was missing
for it was the beginning of tranformation and information

which is seen as off limits
where people stick to the boxes that are there or the stereotypes
and going to meet the other contestants to study
she felt out of place and camera made her look out of place
and her mentor was trying to show her you are not out of place

for when many will name genius
a name of african descent will be omitted
yet obviously there are many who are and have been
and the mentor was not guiding her in merely others exploits not similar to her own
which creates estrangement
but those similar
such as
and frederick douglass
who is seen in the hallway of the white house

and when she started to succeed the sense of community which was invoked
from those who bullied her to those
seen as anti intellectualism

i will leave you with the quote which was said in the movie

Different lifts same floor

I was watching a very strange video
which inspired this post

if it was a rap video
showing the plurality of views
which was a very strange experience

which tied in a lot with a discussion i had the previous weekend
of the variety of views

a few weeks prior i recalled how certain affiliations create sides
but specifically with the martin luther king and malcolm x debate or stance
how some are pro martin luther just because he is christian or publicised
and others malcolm x because he is muslim and not so publicised

though their actions and life styles maybe the opposite
but what the video showed me was the other view
and has been pointed out whatever your stance that both were after the same goal though
it was to different degrees

but back to the video
it was a kind of response to and of the criminal based urban lifestyle

in response to an alternative lifestyle that looks down upon the criminalised element or antithesis
which ties into another thing i discussed that weekend of a
black middle class and does it exist

the person in question claimed it did not exist
but others would argue against it
some would claim having a nuclear family is a sign of middle class
or would point to a parents profession
did they come home in a suit or a tie
or with a companies logo across their chest

or some would claim that any one who does not work directly with their hands is middle class and up

others would claim income

or even down to the vocabulary at your disposal
UNon-U
VegetablesGreens
ScentPerfume
GraveyardCemetery
SpectaclesGlasses
False TeethDentures
NapkinServiette
SofaSettee or Couch
Lavatory or LooToilet
LunchDinner (for midday meal)
PuddingSweet
but not to deviate so much
it was a tale of the non middle class black or could be urban person
where as the others would look down on them for criminality
you see it differently from their view

first of they do not want to be poor and you only have to go to the local job centre to feel the sombre mood of those on handouts

some may argue they should be more pro active
but they are the same people who say there is a recession on
and hear in the news about unemployment and its rises and falls
and higher education does not necessary mean an escape from class
as is evident in the following story
http://www.guardian.co.uk/higher-education-network/blog/2012/aug/03/academic-job-seeking-and-post-doc-unemployment
and if you are more a fan of pop culture look no further than john q

though we sympathize with the character trying to save his son
sorry about spoilers
this is a reality of lots of people
and criminality for people gets the job done
and they will do it whether you vilify them or not
because they need to provide
for their families
it is not as portrayed their addictions

the person rapping paints a picture of a person
who has been to jail and now with a criminal conviction
can not get the work others tell him to do
and rather than fit the role of lazy
is actually being pro active
trying to make things happens
and that he has dreams of what
others take for granted like going on vacations

personally i have met people without passports
and people who have never left their side of the city

and the argument is made that he is working with the tools he has
and though we may look down at him we are on the same floor
which questions are we looking down
essentially vertically or horizontally

i did touch on this in a previous post about a certain police poster

realising we are people at different parts of the same boat

and what are we doing to help

which questioned me on that weekend

that with those people who look vertically which is really horizontally
they escape that lifestyle
but never go back their to pull others out of it

gain wisdom but never share it

for if you the reader opened a business would you hire
felons or those so called straight cut citizens
with degrees
and phds

and i will leave on that question and this link
