Role reversal

William shakespeare famously wrote

all the worlds a stage
and all the men and women are merely players
they have their exits and their entrances
and one man in his time plays many parts

we all have our roles and even our costumes
thought of as uniforms which get us into character
but what of the roles of others

a clear view can be taken from the retail sector
where the workers act as different cogs of a grand machine
mostly not noticed by the consumers
aka costumers

you have your front of house the presentable smilers and greeters
the focal points of queries
then for most you have the cashiers
which is what is seen on the surface
whereas underneath is teeming with movement an action

the public space is that the public space where the environment is controlled
from mannequins in transparent windows
or enticing products and advertising
once entering the shop there is an ocean of goods between you and the cashiers

but underneath the appearance and out of view of the shopping experience are
others holding on to a livelihood and propping up your image of the public domain
always stocked shelves or railings
the removal of clutter on the floor
clutter that even you might have created

and with your general questions easily answered by those front of house
the more dense and complex they become the more of the players behind the screen emerge
such as managers and non front house staff

this is best shown in a footwear shop
where only one piece of footwear is present
and then your footwear is searched for and the focus now becomes behind the screens
away from the eyes of the public

but it is not only the public who do not see
some of the staff do not see the workings of those
behind the curtains
such as with a band most peoples eyes are on the lead singer
but what about the drummer or keyboardist

i was lucky enough to experience recently the workings of a stockroom worker
and how the person came in before the rest of the staff
early morning hauling product up a forty five degree slope
sometimes without help
and that their were others who actually goaded him about his relevancy
and if he does any work

but his was the tale of just one person who is invisible and bereft of thanks
i previously talked about talents and how people do not always recognise their own
but what about the importance and talents of others
the greatest problem affecting teams are the egos and the appreciation of the others job

which is seen greatly in sport
such as football most people focus on the big moments
oh he scored a goal
and he saved the team
the individualistic knit pickings born from a collective movement

so perhaps we can go away thinking of the roles of others
because their is no star player without the team backing them

for no matter how good you are or think you are
eleven versus one in a football match will always be one sided
and that there is no i in team

For we all have our roles but sometimes a little role reversal may just do us some good

I would like to give thanks to all the readers and promoters
and the mediums that are involved in this process

i will try to get my next post out within the next four days
as well as the vlog
